Plant Spirit Medicine

Plant Spirit MedicineWhat is Plant Spirit Medicine?

Plant Spirit Medicine was “re-discovered” in the West by Eliot Cowan, although traditional cultures have known about the healing power of the plant spirits forever. Through his study of 5 Element acupuncture and shamanism, Eliot has created an elegant system of healing that encompasses the classical Chinese 5 Element system with the shaman's way of summoning the healing power of the plant spirits.

Plant Spirit Medicine is a unique kind of medicine, that recognizes that plants have Spirit and that Spirit is the strongest medicine. It can touch the deepest reaches of the heart and soul-and that is where so many of us wounded.

Plant Spirit MedicineThe Five Elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. They are energetic forces which are seen in all natural phenomena including human beings. When the Five Elements are in balance within us, Vital Energy or Qi flows from one element to another, creating health and happiness. When they are out of balance, the natural flow of Qi becomes disturbed or blocked, resulting in illness and disease. The Plant Spirit Medicine Practitioner addresses any lack of balance and harmony between the 5 Elements by calling to the plant spirits who carry the particular energy the patient needs.

One of the unique aspects of PSM is the living relationship between plant, practitioner and patient. The practitioner develops a relationship with the local plants who have offered their healing energy through meditation, shamanic journeying and on-going friendship. The plant spirits are willing to share their gifts of balance, love, support and healing to the patient, at the practitioner's request.

What happens at the first consultation?

The first visit takes about two hours. Together we will discuss your current concerns, general health, your medical and family history, diet, work, life situation and emotional history. We explore how you deal with your emotions and with stress A short physical examination is carried out, with your permission.

Plant Spirit MedicineWhat happens during the treatment?

For the treatment you will lie on a couch, fully clothed, and the practitioner administers the plant medicine by placing their hands lightly on the body. As in acupuncture, the practitioner reads the energy pulses on the wrist before, during and after the treatment.

Plant spirit medicine can be described as a form of spiritual healing or as a kind of acupuncture without needles. No physical substances are prescribed or administered.

What are the effects of treatment?

Everyone will respond differently-the effects may be subtle and gently transformative or they may be more powerful, provoking healing reactions as illness and old unresolved issues make their way out of the mind-body-spirit. As imbalances are addressed on the spirit level, improvement start to be seen on the physical, mental and emotional levels. Patients often report an increased sense of well-being, in advance of physical symptoms changing.

Plant Spirit MedicineHow long and how often will I need to come for treatment?

The benefits of PSM can only be gained over a period of time. For this reason I ask for a commitment to come for treatment for a minimum of 3 months.

Treatments are usually arranged once a week initially. As improvement is experienced treatments will become less frequent. The rate of improvement varies from person to person as each person's healing journey is unique. Many people who have got better continue to come for treatments at regular intervals to maintain their health.

"I have been coming to see Susan every month for Plant Spirit Medicine for over a year now. I had a chronic auto-immune disease affecting my circulation and digestion and also fibromyalgia. In this year, healing has been profound, at such a deep level. I feel the plant spirits, through Susan, have literally brought me back to life, with their infinite patience and compassion."
